Spain won the UEFA under-17 championship in Belgium yesterday, beating England 1-0 in a scrappy, tactical final. Fran Mérida and Rhys Murphy both played and the Spaniard had a hand in the winning goal, which was stroked home by Krkic after Mérida's attempt was blocked by the keeper. England missed their midfield anchor, Henri Lansbury, who was recovering from concussion sustained in the semi-final last Thursday. Gavin Hoyte was on the bench for England but didn't get onto the field.
The young Gunners now return home for the Premier Academy league play-off semi-final, at home against Leicester City tomorrow (Tues 15 May). Whether they are all judged fit & fresh enough to play remains to be seen.
