St Totteringham's Day approaches by Rupe

Yes, it is (we think) nearly that time of year again. St Totteringham's Day is almost here.

That's the name which long-time Arseweb reader (and one-time sponsor!) Julian Shulman gave last year to the day which comes every season, when Tottenham can no longer finish above Arsenal in the league.

Like Easter, the actual date of St Totteringham's Day varies from year to year. Last year the festival fell on 19th March, and in a spirit of goodwill and sympathy appropriate to the season Arseweb would like to congratulate our North London rivals for already ensuring that the celebrations will this season come a bit later. In fact the earliest that Arsenal can clinch mathematical superiority over Tottenham in 2002-2003 is now 23rd March, in the home match against Everton.

Another Arseweb reader, Aidan O'Byrne, has taken on the task of working it all out. His interest has been heightened by a bet he has with his Spurs mate Piers, on whether it will fall before April Fool's Day. And Aidan has kindly made available his specially prepared (and rather snazzy) Excel spreadsheet, which we can all now use to to calculate when St Totteringham's Day will fall.

You can download the file here. You will have to say "Yes" when it asks you if you want to allow macros (when Excel opens the file) in order to activate all the features (like the reset button). Then just select win lose or draw for the various matches remaining for the 2 clubs, and the spreadsheet does the rest.

Many thanks to Aidan. Unfortunately for him, it's looking good for Piers bet-wise.

We hope to be making a "title run-in" version of the spreadsheet available a bit later in the season.

See spreadsheets page for title run-in and other spreadsheets added later.

Aidan won his bet at the last attempt, thanks to a last minute winning penalty for Bolton on 24th March.
